Responsible tenants should be allowed pets

After reading the article about the two maintenance men who are accused of torturing that poor cat in Franklin Township, it brings to mind a point: There are a lot of homeless animals in this country, and most of the time people who rent apartments are not allowed to have pets. I can't see the logic in that. I realize the owners can set whatever rules they like. But it seems reasonable to me that tenants who are responsible should be allowed to have pets, especially if they are willing to cover the animals under their renters' insurance and are perhaps willing to give an extra half-month security to cover whatever damage their pet may do.

I have had a cat for six years and my dog (which happens to be a pit bull) for three years. Neither of them has ever caused any damage.

I think landlords should be more open-minded when it comes to pets. I'm sure plenty of landlords have had their property destroyed and it had nothing to do with pets but everything to do with irresponsible tenants.
